Overcomers (Ps T L Mukumba) 3-Jan-2021

1 John 5:4-5

4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.5 Who is he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God? (KJV)

1. In natural everyone that is born have got a DNA: DNA is the carrier of genetic information. The fundamental and distinctive characteristics or qualities of someone or something, especially when regarded as unchangeable.

a. DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid), a self-replicating material which is present in nearly all living organisms as the main constituent of chromosomes.

DNA doesn’t lie, it reveals secrets.

We inherit a certain DNA from our parents; believers have one spiritual parent, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who (Elohim) created us in His own image. He is our evidence of spiritual DNA that we have. The spiritual DNA of Overcoming, of love, obedience and of faith.

Christians live in a real world that is beset with formidable obstacles. It is not easy to obey God. It is much easier to drift with world and disobey him and do your own thing

But we need to know that the Christian is born of God. This means he has a devine nature within him and it is impossible for the divine nature to disobey God and behave otherwise.

For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world (1 John 5:4). Our victory is a result of faith and if grow in faith as we grow in love. The more you love someone the more is easier to trust him. The more our love for Christ is perfected the more our faith is perfected, because faith and love mature together.

The word overcome was a favorite word with John. He used it in 1 John 2:13-14 with reference to overcoming the Devil. He also used it 7 times in Revelations, to describe believers and the blessing they receive when they overcome. Rev 2:7,11,17,26; Rev 3:,12 and 21. He used the name Overcomer as name for a true Christian. Because we are born of God, we are overcomers.

There was a solder in the Army of Alexander the Great who was not acting bravely in battle. When he should have been pressing ahead, he was lingering behind. The great General approached him asked him his name, and he said his name was Alexander. The general looked straight in his eyes and said, “Soldier get in their and fight or change your name.

What is your name, “Children of God”, born of God, born of the Spirit? Alexander the Great wanted his name to be symbol of courage, our names carry in it assurance of victory. To be born of God means to share God’s victory. This is the victory of faith. But faith in what faith, in God. The person who overcomes the world is the one that believes Jesus is the Son of God.

If you have a bottle of pure water and you think that it has got poison and yet it’s not poison you will not drink it, though you are thirst, you will die of thirst. Some of us we don’t use the name of Jesus, read the word of God because we don’t know what we have. We just think it’s ordinary and we are dying whilst we are holding the water of life. Some are filled with negative and wrong conspiracies. When Jesus was talking to woman of Samaria in Samaria, in John 3:14, He said: “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.”

It is not faith in ourselves, but our faith in Christ that gives us victory. Jesus said in John 16:13, “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Our identification with Christ reminds us that as He is so are we, (1 John 4:17) “As he is, so are we in the world”. We should walk in light as he is in the light (1 John 1:7). If we claim to be with Him, we should conduct ourselves as He conducted himself. (1 John 2:6). His children are to be on earth as He is in heaven.

We have been buried and crucified with Him as Paul says, “I have been crucified with Christ” (Galatians 2:20). And in Romans 6:4, “Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.” May the Lord help you to walk in the newness of life.

When Christ ascended into heaven, we ascend with him and are seated with him in heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6) “And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:” And when Christ return we shall share His exaltation, (Colossians 3:4) “When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.” We are in Christ, born of God and we are overcomers.

Paul says in Ephesians 1:19-22 “19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power, 20 Which he wrought in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, 21 Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: 22 And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,” Brethren, where a man sits determines his authority and power. The decisions that a CEO or President of a company takes are different from a general manager, like wise a General manager responsibility and decisions differ in comparison to a junior manager, and also a junior manager to a general employee/worker. The same with a child of God. When we trust Christ we are identified by him, through the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 12:13, “For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.” If you are born of God, you have got all power, we need to learn how access it. We access it by our faith in the word of God (Hebrews 11)

A civil War veteran used to wonder from place to place, begging a bed and bite to eat, and always talking about his friend, Mr Lincoln. Because of his injuries he could not get a steady job but as long as he could keep going, he kept on chatting about his beloved friend President Lincoln. Our day a skeptical by stander challenged him and said, “Sir you say you knew Mr Lincoln, I am not sure you did, Prove it! The old man said sure I can prove it, He reached his wallet and took out a much folded piece of paper from his wallet and showed. He said I apologize I am not much of reading, but I know this is Mr. Lincoln signature. The young man jumped and said, “Sir do know what you are carrying, you have a generous federal pension authorized by President Lincoln, you do not have to walk like a poor beggar, Mr Lincoln have made you rich.”

To paraphrase many Christians do not have to walk around defeated because Jesus Christ have made us victors. He has defeated every enemy, and you share His victory. Now by faith claim you victory. The key of course is faith. Faith is always the key to access your victory. If you believe Jesus is the son of God, and that he died for you and rose again and is seated on the right hand of the hand of the Father. You should believe what he says. He made you conqueror and declared you a winner (Romans 8:31-39). The great man of faith in Hebrews 11 they simply took God’s word and acted on it, He honoured their faith and gave them victory. Faith is not simply saying that what God says is true, but true faith is acting on what God says because it is true. Someone said faith is not much of believing in spite of evidence but it is obeying in spite of consequence.

Lastly Victorious faith is as a result of maturing love. The better we come to know and love Jesus Christ, the easier it is to trust Him with needs and battles of life. It is important that this maturing love become a regular and practical thing in our daily lives.

Why should we overcome. Because whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world

Our New birth Christ makes us winners and Overcomers (John 3:1-21 and John 15:1-14).
